*** NOT A GIFT ***
Dogs should never be given as a surprise gift. If the recipient isn’t ready for a dog, that most likely, the dog will be surrendered.
Giving a surprise gift to an unsuspecting person, who is not prepared for a dog, is never a good idea. Dogs are a lot of work – from training, to walking, to giving it enough attention. Getting a dog should never be a “spur of the moment” decision. If your gift recipient is ready for a dog, have them take this quiz to finding the right dog. Also have them read this blog, so they have an idea of what’s to come 🙂
Should you get one puppy or two?
Puppies are demanding. They are active, curious and full of life. They chew anything and everything. They explore the world around them with a zest, therefore requiring constant supervision. Teaching commands can be done one puppy at a time – one puppy is playing, while the other puppy is being taught. Teaching 2 puppies at the same time is difficult, as they are usually focused on one another.
You should choose 2 puppies only if you have enough time to dedicate to them. For beginners, its best to choose one puppy, and once they first puppy is used to you and its obedient, you may get another one.
It’s a good idea to neuter/spay your dog, if you are not planning on breeding them. It is also a humane thing to do, as neutering reduces aggression. In today’s society, we already have an abundance of homeless, unloved and unwanted dogs. Most of them get euthanized. Wouldn’t it be better to prevent all of that by neutering your pooch?
City of Toronto, charges less of an annual dog tag free for registering your dog, when it’s neutered. So when is it a good time to neuter your fur-baby?
The best time is always before the dog reaches sexual maturity. However, different dogs mature at different times. So as a general rule, most puppies get neutered/spayed at 5 – 9 month of age.
Here is the list of some of my favorite veterinary clinics, in Toronto and Area:
- Ajax North Pet Hospital – located in Ajax
- Brimley-Lawrence Animal Clinic – located in Scarborough
- Leslie Street Animal Hospital – located in Richmond Hill
- Dr. Brodetsky – Mobile Veterinarian for home visits
If you are reading this, you are probably a few weeks again from getting a pooch. I love you already.
Every dog is unique and I usually have a selection of names to choose from. I never choose a name ahead of time. I make a list of names that work, I wait until I get a dog and sense it personality, than I choose a name from my list.
So what are the rules of a good dog name? These rules aren’t set in stone, but they are here to help you call your dog faster:
- Short names are best
- Easy to call
- Two-syllable i.e. Fido, Tofu, Zulu, Kiki
Long names such as Isabella, Thunder or Sunshine are too involved for calling. By the time you are done pronouncing it, the dog has moved on to the next project.
Look at every dog as an individual – with its own personality and preferences. Therefore before getting a pooch, consider your living arrangements and the right dog for you. Some dogs need a yard to exercise and it would simply be cruel to restrict them from this basic pleasure. Some dogs have bad separations anxiety and don’t like being home along for extended periods of time. And some are simply afraid of everything and prefer to hide in your lap all day.
So how do you go about finding the right fit for you?
